kenzo perfume

  • This Kenzo perfume ad directed by Spike Jonze is just the sort of goofy good fun your morning might need. (The Cut)
  • Here are some pretty random-but-interesting Guinness World Records involving books. (Flavorwire)
  • I love how totally Amber Heard continues to own Johnny Depp in their divorce. (Pajiba)
  • This footage of Nirvana playing Smells like Teen Spirit at a small club just two days after Nevermind was released in 1991 is a nice little nostalgia blast. (Kottke)
  • Pretty silly rules for college women from the 1950s. (History Buff)

Top 5 of the week

glen plaid

Today we direct our gaze to J. Crew, where there is at the moment much to like. As a for instance: this Glen Plaid blazer, because suddenly I really want a plaid blazer, no idea why.

block print shirt

A hippie-girl-type-print gets chic when executed in darker hues.

amo jeans

These jeans have got a few things exactly right: the dark grayish wash, the slight crop, and the cute twisted ankle hem.

fatigue shirt

This fatigue shirt would be so perfect with a pair of white jeans and sandals.

green stripes

The big bold stripes and poppy, poppy green here just kill me.

  • Trippy pictures of North Korean socialist architecture. (Flavorwire)
  • Here are ten of the most beautiful public gardens in the world. (Mental Floss)
  • Five of Gene Wilder’s most memorable movie moments. (Time)
  • Ugh! I hate to hear that stellar NYC bookstore Three Lives & Co. might have to find a new home. (New Yorker)
  • But at least there’s this bit of good news: the Ali Forney Center for LGBT youth is just about ready to open their first 18-bed shelter on the Lower East Side, named for its benefactor, Bea Arthur. (A.V. Club)

Things I bought, things I want, travel necessities edition

Screen Shot 2016-08-26 at 4.21.06 PM

It’s taken me years of poking around the Liberty of London site to discover that they sell travel umbrellas, and in some pretty unstoppable prints—like this bold and bright Ianthe, which you’ve really got to click through and magnify to appreciate, and which I decided was absolutely worth the overseas shipping fee.

I love my household UE Boom speaker—it delivers a mighty, crisp sound for such a wee little thing—and this travel version is cute as the dickens and rings in at well under $100, which is nice.

Since everybody’s suitcases look somewhat alike, I like to go for a luggage tag that’s got a little something different going on. Plus, any excuse to let a splash of metallic into your life is a good one in my book.

I’m double-dipping on the Liberty in this post if that’s OK with you, because I couldn’t quite resist this poppy little cosmetic bag.

Probably the cutest sleep mask ever.

I’ve said it before and I’ll dare to repeat it: you never know when the plane you’re about to board is going to be absolutely freezing, which is why I always travel with a Chan Luu silk-and-cashmere-blend scarf to press into service as a blanket. (Here is a nice and cheaper alternative from Nordstrom.)

And finally: the suitcase of my dreams.

It’s a party! With shopping!

clare v store

The lovely ladies at Clare Vivier are throwing a party for Girls of a Certain Age, and how lucky does that make us? It’s on Thursday September 8, between the hours of 7 to 9, and you’ll get a chance to enjoy the gorgeous new fall collection, free monogramming with purchase, and a whopping 20% off everything. And wine and champagne, but of course. It’s at their Nolita store—239 Elizabeth Street. Please do come and show your beautiful faces.
