Because Andrea Linett (check out her fantastic blog here) is the only person I’ve ever met who looks good in a Canadian tuxedo, and because she’s got excellently high-low taste in denim (whereas, as many of you have pointed out, I am stuck in high) I asked her to provide a rundown of the best of the cheapest. Lucky us, she said yes.
“I am into this somewhat dorky-yet-sexy shape lately, and the flare is just flared enough without being costumey.”
‘These have a cool A.P.C. feel (dark, straight, not super-skinny) but with 1% stretch to keep them comfy.”
“My new go-tos now come in black for fall!”
“I love all my shrunken little jackets but am wanting one like this—perfectly oversize so it looks fresh and can fit over sweaters.”
“These are called The Bianca, but they remind me more of Jane Birkin, and I would wear them with a more fitted tee or sweater.”
“I love a good denim work shirt and the details on this one (dark buttons, great wash) make all the difference.”
“And here’s a great button-front 70s skirt to wear now and with boots and a peacoat or big cardigan later.”
My closet is jammed with bags, and I only have two or three in rotation at the same time—and they’re pretty much the same two or three. Right now it’s the black Clare Vivier number I wrote about here; a summery red-and-white Antonello tote (that is sold out everywhere or else I’d show it to you) for when I’ve got to carry a lot of stuff around; and—in current, constant rotation—this little wonder, which has sold me on the utility and stylishness of grey bags in a big way: they really do go with everything, and on days that I’m about to walk out of the house all in black yet again, they add a little punch to the situation. I am crazy for this one from Rag & Bone, with its nifty cream and black details.
Grey suede looks especially refined, and this tote is also very nicely priced, which is lovely.
Another suede option, big enough to fit your laptop.
Roomy enough for work, cool enough for after-work.
A cute little cross-body option from Madewell.
I like the high, feminine waistline here, absolutely love the print, and believe that although the colors are summery, this dress will take you right into chillier weather with the addition of black boots, tights, and a cardigan.
Just one of the best striped dresses I’ve ever seen.
This smart black tee dress is comfortable, classic, and eminently packable.
A black floral looks right no matter what time of year it is.
If I still worked in an office, I would wear the hell out of this.
Clean-lined up top, flounce on the bottom; improbable, but it totally works.
Tomorrow I’m leaving for Central America—for two whopping weeks—but this space will not be empty: I’ve got some fun posts lined up for you, so do keep checking in. And expect me back on the 28th.
This Stella McCartney for Adidas bag, which I purchased at the beginning of the season—is definitely my best investment in recent memory. It’s meant for the gym, I suppose, but is super-light, and its ability to absorb all your stuff and then fit more makes it perfection for travel. Plus, it expands, making ample room for whatever fun little purchases you might have made while away.
Occasionally, when I find something I love that costs more than I care to spend, I’ll post it here to get it out of my system. That’s what I did last fall with this dark-on-dark camo anorak—which you can now find quite marked down (but alas, still not exactly cheap) at Emerson Fry.
