It’s Thanksgiving Eve

Turkey Float in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Which means it’s once again time to tell me what you guys are feeling grateful for this year. For me it’s all about family, and especially my mom, who has dealt with some tough times over the past months with unbelievable amounts of strength and grace. We all become mortified at times that we are turning into our moms; it’s a story as old as time. But lately I’ve seen a side of her that is so much better than anything I’ve shown the world that I can only pray it rubs off. Also, I’m wicked thankful for you guys, who turn this space into so much more than just words and pictures on a screen. You and you alone remain my muses. Have a fantastic holiday, and see you back here Monday.

Welcome to my annual attempt to find reasonably attractive parkas

Screen Shot 2013-11-26 at 1.08.39 PM

No season is a more swift and efficient style killer than winter, and no one article of clothing is more responsible for that annual death of chic than the down jacket. They are as inherently unattractive as they are unilaterally necessary, and they make us all look a little bit like each other as we lumber down the sidewalk, all puffy and bundled. I have managed to dig a few up that I think are on the cuter side of things, though. They’e all thigh-length, because a girl’s got to stay warm. First up: this wooly on the outside, downy on the inside number with a hood and always- cute toggles.

I like the cocoon shape here, and the funnel neck looks like it’d be crazy cozy.

zara puffer

So very sportif in the navy, and nice and slim in proportion, with a black faux fur collar. I am forever a sucker for the blue and the black.

zara quilted

This one’s just like a really smart, big, well-proportioned hug.

leather sleeves

A little bit on the shorter side, but I’m allowing it because it’s got leather sleeves, which is kind of to die.

Cheap and chic of the week

zara faux

My position regarding faux fur is that if you choose wear it, it’s best to dive right in and go really obviously faux. This swellegant little bundle doesn’t fool anyone even for a moment, but that’s part of its charm, don’t you think?

A few pretty candle gifty-type things for you

diptique holiday candle

Nobody does a holiday special edition candle better than Diptique—or really even comes close—because they’re always beautiful, and accomplish the objective of being festive without going all green and red and predictable. I particularly like this year’s model, which has an Indian print painted over the company’s classic black and white label in a way that comes off almost graffiti-ish.

golden woods

I just was obsessing over this quite woodsy-scented number from DL & Co. at Bigelow on Saturday afternoon, and might well have brought it home were it not for the fact that my home has as many half-burned candles in it as a 14 year-old girl’s bedroom the morning after a seance.

This has a fresh white cypress scent—perfect for when there’s a chill in the air. But really, the main event is that crazyass orange and brown glass vessel.
